FAQs Related to Mangalore Tiles

Back in the day, everyone had to utilize Mangalore tiles in their homes. Even before 1947, the majority of the government's tile purchases came from Mangalore due to the region's reputation for producing long-lasting tiles that can withstand even the heaviest rains. The form and interlocking nature of the tiles work together to keep the rain out. They also lack a permeable structure. This type of tile is often used since it is small and lightweight, making it simple to both carry and install. Making these tiles requires a lot of hard work and organic resources. These price increases have resulted in the closure of several manufacturing facilities.

First clay tile factory in India was established in 1860 at Mangalore. These tiles, known as "Mangalore tiles," were produced using the domestic production of hard laterite clay and were well-liked for its varied color palette, unique shapes, and high quality. The significant iron concentration of the clay used gives the tile its distinctive dark red color. In the right hands, they may last for up to seventy-five years, making them an excellent construction material. Due to their modular nature, they require little in the way of upkeep and, should any damage occur, just the damaged tiles need to be replaced. Originally from China, they made their way to the Middle East where they were put to use as roofs.

The size of Mangalore tiles is 10x16 inches. Clay tiles are available in a wide range of sizes, colors, and forms, testifying to the diversity of local soils and the expertise of tilemakers. Various installation techniques informed the variety of forms that resulted. There are many different kinds of tiles, such as flat tiles, curved and handcrafted pot tiles, pan tiles (which are similar to pot tiles but are created in a different way and are commonly used in rural areas), S-shaped tiles from Allahabad, and so on. Because heat triggers chemical reactions that affect color, the firing process may bring out a wide range of hues in the tiles.

Roofs made with Mangalorean tiles have been proven to last for a long time and be simple to install, not to mention being environmentally beneficial. Clay construction, including tiled roofs, is thought to be one of the most environmentally friendly options available. The hot air rises to the underside of the tiles and is dissipated via the gaps in the tiled roofs, resulting in a passive cooling effect that is artificially generated. Even if far higher slopes of 33 or 45 degrees were provided in the past, each tiled roof needs to have a minimum slope of 25 degrees. It's not easy to track down the source of water seepage once the tile has been pasted, much alone replacing the broken one.
