What is the process to obtain rice from paddy?

The three fundamental procedure involved in the production of rice is de-husking steaming and polishing. Pre-processing step includes removal of impurities from the paddy stock that is to undergo processing.

Is production of raw rice and parboiled rice follows same process?

Production of raw rice is different from that of parboiled rice. Raw rice doesn’t undergo the steaming process whereas the paddy grains used for processing parboiled rice pass through the steaming process before after de-husking and before polishing.

Which is more healthy –raw rice or parboiled rice?

Both type of rice has its own nutritional values. Parboiled rice carries less nutrients as some of them get removed because of steaming process. However parboiled rice is easy to digest and is light on stomach system. Raw rice carries more nutrients that are good for human body. But the presence of heavy nutrients makes it difficult for digestion after consumption.

Raw Rice refers to the type of rice that has not been steamed beforehand. Raw Rice is also known as white rice. The process includes de-husking of paddy followed by polishing to get raw rice. De-husking is the process by which husk is removed from the paddy. It is different from parboiled rice as it does not undergo soaking in water and steaming. That is the reason raw rice retains more quantity of thiamine biotin and niacin compared to parboiled rice as soaking and steaming causes reduction in these nutrients.

Raw rice can be found in different varieties. Some of the major varieties include Sugandha Raw Rice 1121 Raw White Basmati Rice 1121 Raw Basmati Rice Sonam Raw Rice Banskati Rice Sona Masoori Raw Rice Dunar Festiva Rice etc. 

Processing of Raw Rice

Pre-processing of raw rice involves removing the unwanted impurities to obtain impurities-free paddy. The first step includes de-husking the husk from the paddy by friction in hulling machine. In rice mills the certain quantity of paddy grains is made to pass between two abrasive surfaces that help in removing the husk very fast unlike traditional method of mortar and pestles. Once separated the husk is removed using suction. The obtained brown rice then collected in a storage container for remaining process.

Polishing a Polishing involves removing the bran layer and the germs from the de-husked rice. Abrasion or friction mechanism is applied to the rice kernels for removing the tough bran sticking to the kernel. The amount of removal of bran depends on the whiteness required. Due to continuous abrasive friction the rice grains turn white after the process finishes. This process can be repeated for obtaining enhanced whiteness of the Raw Rice.

Manufacturers use tray separator or cylindrical grader for segregating broken white raw rice and broken rice.
