The liquid to be concentrated flows down as a thin film down the evaporated tubes. The steam on the outside of the tube provides the energy for evaporation. This type is suitable only for liquid and solutions, which are, clear and are of low viscosity. The wetting parameter as it is termed is principle function of viscosity, surface tension, and tube diameter and vapor velocity. The film if highly turbulent can striate at bottom portion of the tube bundle and can be a measure cause of tube scaling and blockage as material burnout can take place at the interface of striation and bare tube. The tube perpendicularity also affects this performance.
