Styling: The T-shirt style is created and the measurements are transferred to patterns. Size differences and stylistic preferences are accommodated.

Cutting: The T-shirt sections are cut to the pattern dimensions. A tubed body or separate front and back sections sleeves possibly pockets and trim comprise the pieces.

Assembling the front and back: When using non-tubed fabric the separate pieces for the front and back sections must be stitched together at the sides. They are stitched together using an over-edge stitch and joined at the seam lines to form a simple narrow superimposed seam.

Assembling the sleeves: Because it is easier to hem the fabric while it is flat the hems of sleeves are usually finished before they are fitted into the garment. If the T-shirt body is tubular the sleeve material is sewn together first before being set into the garment.

Stitching the hem: The hem of a garment is typically sewn with an overedge stitch resulting in a flexible hem. The stitch tension should be loose enough to allow the garment to be stretched without tearing the fabric. A combination of edge finishing stitches is used in alternative hem styles.

Adding pockets: T-shirts intended for casual wear can have pockets sewn into them. Higher-quality T-shirts will include an interlining in the pocket to help it keep its shape. As the pocket is sewn onto the front of the T-shirt the interlining is inserted.

Stitching the shoulder seams: Shoulder seams in general necessitate a simple superimposed seam. Seams on higher-quality T-shirts may be reinforced with tape or elastic.

Attaching the neckband: The neck edge of a crew neck shirt should be slightly smaller in circumference than the outer edge where it is attached to the garment. As a result the neckband must be stretched just enough to prevent bulging. Tubular neck bands are manually applied.

Label setting: At the back of the neckline one or more labels are usually attached. Labels contain information such as the manufacturer's name size fabric content and washing instructions.
