Q: How does an industrial metal detectors work?

The industrial metal detectors have one transmitter coil and two receiver coils, one on either side of the transmitter, generating a constant electromagnetic field. When a metal is detected, an unequal disturbance is produced in the magnetic field that is translated into an electrical signal interpreted by a control unit to remove the contaminated food from the production line.

The industrial metal detectors are used for automatic detection and removal of metal contaminants from the production line. They use a powerful sensor probe to find broken needles or shards of metal in distinctive stages as part of product inspection. For this purpose, they are integrated into production line.

For example, the most common type of industrial metal detector uses a transmitter coil and two receiver coils; when a food product enters the tunnel integrated with coils, a signal on both the receiver coils is produced and nullified against each other. When a metal contaminant is detected, a reversed magnetic field is created that is translated into a small electrical signal, further interpreted by a control unit to remove the food product from the production line.

Many types of industrial metal detectors are used in vast-range applications, including pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, garment, chemicals, packaging, plastics, mining, etc. They are capable of detecting ferrous and non-ferrous metals, such as steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, etc. They can also detect precious stones, including gold.
