The Doppler Radar measures the absolute ground speed which can be reliably used as the reference vehicle speed. By comparing the Doppler speed with each rotating axle speed, the slip/slide can be found out for each axle. The method employed on the GT46MAC or PAC is Ka band Radar. Radar Unit includes a signal processing algorithm (Discrete Fourier Transforms) that determines the strength of return signal from a target. If the signal is strong enough, the output is turned on and the sensor is said to be a lockeda (Good data). Because different targets reflect different amounts of the radar energy back to the sensor (Like tracks, stones, wood, sand, etc), the sensor will lock at different distances from the target depending on such factors as target size, material and orientation. In general, large targets reflect more energy and the sensor will be able to distinguish them at a greater distance.
