Unconventional petroleum deposits include oil sands, tar sands, crude bitumen, and bituminous sands. Oil sands are a naturally occurring mixture of sand, clay, and water-soaked in bitumen, a dense and extremely viscous type of petroleum. The vast majority of refined bitumen, as well as a significant proportion of natural bitumen, is used in paving asphalt and roofing tiles. The majority of bitumen extracted from Canada's oil sands is refined into synthetic crude oil and shipped to refineries to be converted into a variety of petroleum products. This includes gasoline.
