FAQs Related to Cutback Bitumen

Oil products with reduced bitumen content are known as cutback bitumen (Kerosene). The goal is to make the bitumen more fluid so that it can penetrate deeper into the asphalt. Cutback bitumen, in contrast to traditional bitumen, is sprayed on roads at significantly lower temperatures. After being applied, the ingredients used to soften bitumen will evaporate, leaving behind a substance with the same hardness as the original bitumen. Primer seals can preserve pavement for up to 6-12 months when temperatures are too low for an efficient priming operation or when traffic is likely to disturb a primed surface before the final seal can be sprayed.
In order to create cutback bitumen, conventional bitumen is thinned out with a petroleum-based solvent. Since cutback bitumen has a lower viscosity than neat asphalt, it can be employed for low-temperature tasks. When a cutback is performed, the solvent is removed, leaving behind only the Bitumen. When the petroleum solvent in a bitumen cutback evaporates, the bitumen is said to cure. Primers and tack coatings made from cutback bitumen are the norm. Road oils, or slow-curing oils, are typically the byproduct of the fractional distillation of various crude petroleums. Naphthenic, paraffinic, and aromatic oils have all been utilized traditionally.
The primary benefit of this bitumen is that it does not require heating before application. To create cutback bitumen, petroleum extracts including kerosene, naphtha, diesel oil, and furnace oil are mixed in at precise concentrations to act as solvents. There are benefits to using cutback bitumen instead of regular bitumen. The process of heating this low viscosity bitumen was halted once it had been produced because the heating requirements were satisfied by the volatile solvents in the reduced bitumen's composition. The only real issue was the damage that reclaimed bitumen was doing to the environment. Those flammable solvents were harmful to animals, people, and the planet.
The two most common forms of bitumen that work well with cold road construction techniques are bitumen emulsion and cutback bitumen. The use of water as a solvent in emulsified bitumen reduces fire hazards and makes the resulting combination more environmentally friendly than cutback bitumen made from petroleum. Although they share a lower viscosity than conventional bitumen, emulsified and cutback bitumen are distinct from one another. The use of water as a solvent in emulsified bitumen reduces fire hazards and makes the resulting combination more environmentally friendly than cutback bitumen made from petroleum.
