A Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) is a compact, lightweight device used to concentrate oxygen from the ambient air supply by selectively removing nitrogen from the mixture, leaving only oxygen-rich gas stream for use by people requiring supplemental oxygen in homes. It works on-demand. It is plugged into a socket for their optimum performance on electrical power, and can run using battery power to ensure maximum portability. For instance, if youa re in your car and require supplemental oxygen supply then you can plug the device into the automobile outlet. It is a convenient method of providing a continuous source of oxygen supply without the need of use of heavy oxygen tanks. 

The latest model of Portable Oxygen Concentrator is highly reliable as it can produce one to six litres per minute (LPM) of breathable oxygen gas depending on the breathing rate of the patient. The types of POC depending on the operations are: intermittent flow unit and continuous flow (CF) unit. The former weighs between 1.3 kg to 4.5 kg, while the CF unit weighs around 4.5 kg to 9.0 kg. 

This device is a miniature form of oxygen concentrators used in mid-to-large-scale industries. It utilizes Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology to achieve the whole process. The set up of a POC include a small air compressor, a cylinder filled with zeolite minerals, pressure-equalizing reservoir, and valves and tubes. Air compressor compresses air and pass it to the cylinder where zeolite minerals act as adsorbent to adsorb a large quality of nitrogen, leaving oxygen-rich gas in the cylinder that flows to the pressure-equalizing reservoir, which connects to the patienta s oxygen hose. Patient is required to receive oxygen through nasal cannula.
