Calcium acetate functions by binding with the phosphate in the food you eat preventing it from being absorbed and causing it to be excreted from the body. Calcium acetate is a calcium supplement used by dialysis patients with severe kidney disease to regulate the level of phosphate in their blood. Additionally calcium has the ability to attach to other minerals including phosphate and help the body eliminate them.
