Calcium acetate functions by binding with the phosphate in the food you eat, preventing it from being absorbed and causing it to be excreted from the body. Calcium acetate is a calcium supplement used by dialysis patients with severe kidney disease to regulate the level of phosphate in their blood. The following brand names for calcium acetate are also available: Eliphas, PhosLo, Phoslyra, and Calphron. Additionally, calcium has the ability to attach to other minerals, including phosphate, and help the body eliminate them.
