When COVID-19
pandemic hit the world in early 2020, most people complained of fever. Since
social distancing became the usual norm during the pandemic, temperature
checking was done from a distance. Infrared thermometer used to be the perfect
device for this job since it could record a person’s temperature from a certain
distance.
The
distance-to-spot ratio (D:S) is the ratio of the distance to the measurement
surface and the diameter of the temperature measurement area. For example, if
the D:S ratio is 12:1, the diameter of the measurement area is one-twelfth of
the distance to the object. An infrared thermometer with a higher ratio of D to
S is able to sense a more-specific, narrower surface at a greater distance than
one with a lower ratio. A 12:1 rated device can sense a 1-inch circle at a
distance of one foot.
The ideal target
area is area that is at least twice the size of the spot at that distance. When
we have smaller areas relative to distance it would result in less accurate
measurement. An infrared thermometer, therefore, is supposed to be placed too
close to its target since the close distance could cause heat to build up in
the thermometer's housing and damage the sensor. Measurement through infrared
thermometer only decreases with too much distance.
We should hold the
infrared thermometer at a length of 3 fingers put together from the person's
temple, which mean (3-5 cm distance. It should be noted that the infrared
thermometer may not touch the skin.
