The gauge shows the pit depth compared to the nominal pipe wall thickness.

Pipe Pit Gauge is a pocket sized gauge designed to
identify the condition of a pipe.
The gauge is placed horizontally on the surface of the pipe and the stylus
is positioned into the base of the corrosion pit. The gauge shows the pit depth compared to the nominal pipe wall
thickness.
The instrument can be used to compare the pit depth with the pipe thickness. A scale showing pipe
diameters with corresponding wall thickness is marked on the gauge, adjacent to the pit depth scale.
When the indicator arm is in line with the pipe diameter this shows that the pit is approximately the same depth as the wall thickness.
