Levofloxacin 500 mg.

Indications

Levofloxacin is indicated for the treatment of adults with mild, moderate and severe infections in the following:

Acute maxillary sinusitis

Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB)

Community acquired pneumonia (CAP)

Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infection (SSSI)

Complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infection

Acute pyelonephritis

Gynaecological infections like pelvic inflammatory disease (P I D), post gyn. surgical procedures, post I U C D insertions etc.

Dosage

500mg Once Daily

Dosage in patient with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance <- 50ml/min)

Dosage in patients with impaired liver function

No adjustment of dosage is required since Levofloxacin is not metabolized to any relevant extent by the liver and is excreted mainly by the kidneys.

Dosage in the elderly

No adjustment of dosage is required in the elderly, other than that imposed by concentration of renal function.

Adverse reactions associated with Levofloxacin.

In general, these drugs are well tolerated.

G.I toxicity: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea are the commonest side effects.

CNS toxicity: cause CNS toxicity such as confusion, nervousness, agitation, hallucination and rarely convulsions.

Tensio and cartilage damage: Treatment should be discontinued if the patient experiences pain, inflammation and rupture of tendon. They should be avoided in pregnant and nursing mother and in young children.

Hematological toxicity: Rarely, can cause leucopenia, renal damage and acute renal failure.

Miscellaneous toxicity: Allergic reactions have been reported.
