Hydraulic ram apparatus is used to pump little quantity of water to high head from a large amount of water accessible at low head. It works on a water hammer principle, stating that when flowing water is stopped suddenly in a long pipe a pressure wave moves along the pipe and creates an effect of water hammer 1/2.

The set up consists a pipe section equipped with a non-return valve and pulse valve, a supply reservoir which is attached to an overhead tank, and an air vessel above the valve chamber to smooth cyclic variations from the Ram delivery. Various pressure may be practical to the pulse valve to change closing pressure, and hence the operational characteristic. Flow rate of useful and waste-water is measured by using a measuring tank, and stop watch is supplied. Pressure gauge is connected for the measurement purpose.
