Detergents, often known as surfactants, are the washing components in shampoos. A surfactant, also known as a surface-active agent, is a chemical that lowers the surface tension between two liquids. Amphoteric or Zwitterionic Detergents - These detergents are commonly used in shampoos due to their low toxicity and decreased risk of eye and skin irritation, making them ideal for infant care products. Amphoteric detergents are also resistant to hard water, foam and compatible with other surfactants. They emulsify oils well and remove stains, grime, and grease better than anionic detergents.
