Otherwise known as the 'Garden State', Sikkim is one of India's smallest but most beautiful states, situated in the far north-east of the Subcontinent. The mighty Himalayas provide a magnificent backdrop and the area is home to countless thriving monasteries, a plethora of rare flora and fauna and a unique way of living. A colourful flower festival is held here each year from March to May and the whole state is ablaze with colour. Equally colourful are the months of September and October when local dances are performed in the monasteries. This Himalayan journey begins in the heart of the tea growing country and the fabled town of Darjeeling, before visiting a private tea estate, staying as the guest of a local tea planter. Continue deep into the mountains to Pemayangtse where Kanchenjunga appears to be almost within touching distance. From here you reach Sikkim's capital, Gangtok, perched high on a ridge and inhabited predominantly by Buddhists. Your journey ends at the small town of Kalimpong, a delightful place full of flower nurseries and markets.
