Garhwal, geographically almost centrally located in the great Himalayan chain. The mountains in the Garhwal region are most immediate and impressive than in any other region of the Himalaya and it's easy to understand why the range is considered to be the abode the Gods. Garhwal is a 443 km expanse of the Himalayas sandwiched between the Jammu and Kashmir Himalayas and Punjab Himalaya to the North and West, and the Nepal Himalaya in the East. It includes some of the most highest mountains of the entire range and is the source of river Ganges which has spanwed the vast and ancient Hindu civilisation of the plains. These mountains have strong associations with Hindu mythology, and religious shrines dating back centuries are scattered all over the area. While the entire population is Hindu by religion, strangely conflicting sociological systems prevail within garhwal. For example polyandry and polygamy co-exist in villages a few miles away from each other, both with the sanction one religion.
