• The charge: Every laser printer and copier has a photoreceptor, which is a light-sensitive layer. It is a flexible belt or drum that has a tiny layer of photoconductive material added to it. Once confronted with light, the photoreceptor changes from being insulation to conducting. • Transferring: By putting the paper into touch with the toner and then providing a charge with polarity opposite to that of the toner, the powder image is transferred from the photoreceptor onto the paper. The charge must be sufficiently powerful to dislodge the powder's grip on the photoreceptor. The paper, which is now holding the picture, is released from the photoreceptor by a second carefully controlled charge.
  
  
• Fuse: The toner that makes up the image is melted and fused to the paper during the fusing process. The paper is run through two rollers to accomplish this. The toner is melted by a heated roll, which is then compressed by the second roll to fuse the toner to the paper.
