A blast furnace is a heating unit made of steel with inner surface lined with refractory bricks to withstand high temperatures. This huge case is used for smelting iron ore to produce pig iron (small iron pieces) that is further employed to make different types of steel and its grades. Apart from processing iron ore, it can also be used for processing lead, copper and other materials.

In a blast furnace, ores, coke (fuel), and limestone (flux) are introduced from the top of the furnace while the preheated air is blown into the lower section of the furnace through pipes (tuyeres), causing several chemical reactions to take place to melt the iron ore. The waste gas is released from the top and the molten iron is released from the bottom that is poured into moulds and cooled to solidify the iron to make desirable steel products.

FAQs Related to Blast Furnace

Iron ore, copper, and lead are the three common materials melted in a blast furnace – a huge steel case, under high temperature.
In a blast furnace, ores, coke (fuel), and limestone (flux) are continuously supplied from the top of the furnace, and preheated air is blown into the lower section of the system through tuyeres (pipes), prompting several chemical reactions to take place to melt the iron ore.

A blast furnace can operate at a temperature of 900 °C to 1300 °C (1600 °F to 2300 °F), and has the ability to deal with 2000 °C to 2300 °C (3600 °F to 4200 °F).
