What is the Silica Gel?

Amorphous and porous, silica gel is a kind of silicon dioxide (silica) made up of an irregular three-dimensional structure of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, with gaps and pores on the nanometer scale. The cavities could be filled with gas, vacuum, or liquids like water. A more accurate name for this substance is "silica xerogel" in the third scenario.

For the sake of science, silica gel has been around since the 1640s. During World War I, it was used to absorb gases and vapors in gas mask containers.
