What is the Galvanized Pipe?


Steel pipes which have been coated with a protective zinc layer to ward against corrosion and rust are known as galvanised pipes. Before 1960, galvanised pipe was often used in the construction of residential buildings. When it was first developed, galvanised pipe served as an alternative to lead pipe for use in water supply lines. Lead pipe was more common at the time. On the other hand, we now know that galvanised pipes will rust and corrode on the inside if they are exposed to water for extended periods of time over many decades.

When galvanised pipes are originally placed, their hue may be described as being comparable to that of nickel. However, when galvanised pipe ages, its appearance may become much lighter, darker, or drabber, depending on the climate in which it was stored. We have also seen houses in which the water lines have been painted, making it impossible to identify at first sight whether or not the house has running water.

Galvanized Pipe Types


Galvanized steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe that has been given an additional layer of protection in the form of a zinc coating. The zinc layer was intended to act as a sacrificial layer; as a result, it will rust before the layer of carbon steel that lies underneath it. Pipes made of galvanised steel come in two distinct varieties: hot-dipped galvanised steel pipe and cold galvanised steel pipe. The steel pipe's resistance to corrosion will be improved by the galvanised coating.

Hot dipped galvanised steel pipe: In the process of producing this type of pipe, steel pipes with the rust cleaned off of them are dipped into a zinc liquid at temperatures of 500 degrees Celsius. This creates a zinc coating that is connected to the steel surface, so achieving the goal of preventing corrosion. Hot galvanising is a kind of treatment that is used in a variety of steel structural goods since it is an efficient anti-corrosive treatment. It has been more than 180 years since France utilised hot galvanising in the industry for the first time in 1836. The country of France. However, as a result of the invention of cold-rolled steel, there has been a significant advancement in the field in recent decades. Because high-voltage transmission, transportation, and communications all need greater protective product requirements, the market for hot galvanising is also growing. The minimum thickness of the zinc layer on a hot-galvanized steel pipe is 35 micrometres, and the maximum thickness is 650 micrometres. Instead, the thickness of the cold zinc layer is just 5-15 micrometres. The zinc layer has the benefits of protecting against air corrosion as well as electric chemical damage. During the hot galvanising process, a layer of zinc-steel alloy will be created on the surface of the metal initially, followed by a coating of zinc in its purest form.

As a result of the zinc layer being eroded by the air, a basic zinc carbonate protective film and a layer of Zn(OH)2, ZnO, will be formed which has the function of preventing corrosion from occurring in the air. After this film has been obliterated, a fresh one will start to develop. When the zinc layer was damaged to a significant degree, zinc initiated an electric chemical defence system. As the first element to dissolve, zinc was present. It should come as no surprise that hot galvanised steel has superior anti-corrosive qualities compared to the cold galvanising pipe. How long does the lifespan of a hot-galvanized steel pipe last? Pipes made of galvanised steel have a very long lifespan. However, the lifespan of the product will change depending on the circumstances. In general, 13 years in an area with heavy industry, 50 years for an ocean environment, 104 years in the suburbs, and 30 years in the city. In point of fact, galvanising has an anti-rusting effect, thus there is no need for any other kind of rust treatment. The hot galvanising method is well suited for different types of strong acids, alkaline fog, and other highly corrosive situations. Cold galvanised steel pipe: This type of pipe is produced by applying a zinc coating to steel pipe by the use of electric and chemical processes. The thickness of the zinc layer is typically between 20 and 30 m. The zinc layer on cold-galvanized steel pipe has a thickness of 5a 15 micrometres, is dense, and does not include any inclusions of biological matter. The use of cold galvanization as a process for manufacturing pipe is no longer recommended. Because cold galvanised steel pipe has thinner zinc covering than hot galvanised steel pipe, several nations throughout the globe have begun to prohibit its use as a coal gas pipe and water pipe. But since the surface of the finished product has a smooth look when cold galvanising is processed, this method is always utilised in the production of tiny components that need precision plating. In the context of the national economy, the importance of things like screws, the production of atomic energy, aircraft, weaponry, transportation, light industry, chemicals, precise instruments, electronics, and machinery, amongst other things, is rather high.
