Composition:
Each vial contains: Procaine Penicillin 0.4/0.8/1/3mega.

Uses Indications:
Infections caused by below mentioned bacteria. Main indications for Procaine Penicillin are syphilis and gonorrhoea. Additionally it can be used in the treatment of anthrax, pneumonea, Whipple's disease, tetanus and gas gangrene. It should not be used alone in the treatment of severe acute infections.

Properties: Procaine Penicillin is a slightly soluble salt of Benzylpenicillin and hence possessiing similar but prolonged activity as that of abaenzylpenicillin.After i.m injection it forms a depot at the injection site from where it is slowly released and hydrolysed to Benzylpenicillin. It has activity against many gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. Aureus, Clostridium species and Corynobactrium. It also has activity against some gram negativecocci such as Neisseria meningitidis and N, gonorhoea.

Administration:
Procaine Penicillin is administered by deep intramuscular injection and dosage varies with type of infection. Below mentioned doses are meant as guidance.
Generally: 0.6-1.2 million I.U. daily
Syphilis: 0.6 -1.2 million I.U. daily for 10-15 days.
Gonorrhoea: 4.8 million I.U. as a single dose which may be divided in 2 injections at separate sites. In addition lg of probenicid is administered orally.
