Helicobacter pylori is probably the would not common bacterial infection with a world-wide prevalence of approximately 50%. Helicobacter pylori is implicated in the etiology of gastritis and peptic ulceration in humans. Conventional histamine-2 receptor antagonists do not suppress or eradicate H. pylori and has a high rate of ulcer recurrence. Monotherapy using bismuth compounds or antimicrobials is not very efficient with an eradication rate not more than 15-20%. The standard triple therapy regimens comprising a bismuth salt, metronidazole or tinidazole and tetracycline or amoxycillin has proved to be efficient for eliminating H. pylori. But the major disadvantage of bismuth triple therapy is compliance which may be compromised by a patient having to take 15 tablets a day. Newer triple therapies including proton pump inhibitor such as Pantoprazole plus tinidazole and clarithromycin may serve as shorter, simpler and efficient drug regimen for the eradication of H. pylori. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses the final step in gastric acid production by forming a covalent bond to two sites of the (H + ,K + )- ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell.
