Pharmacological Actions

Shatavri: Increases
the uterine weight. The saponin fraction of the extract exhibits
anti-oxytocic activity poducing a specific block of the pitocin induced
contractions of the spontaneous uterine motility.

Nagkesher: has
been found potentiating the alpha effects of adrenaline, relaxing the
smooth muscles, thereby exhibiting anti-oxytocic activity inhibition
against 5-HT induced conractions of the uterus. Nagkeshar also to its
calopyllide content reduces the increasing permeability in capillaries
and thus tones up the endometrial vascularity, thus checking excessive
bleeing and vaginal discharge.

In cases of
hypermenorrhoea, the relief with Lodhra due to its glycoside content
loturine, Collaturine and Loturidine was found to reduce the frequency
and intensity of contractions of both pregnant or non-pegnant uterus of
animals in in-vitra studies, thus reducing the probability of habitual
abortion. Lodhra is found to have estrogenic action on experimental
aminal uterus, due to its glucasidal content 3-monoglucoluronoside of
7-0 methyl leucopelagonidin, which is high astringent and is reported
to extert vasoconstrictor activity. A clinical study showed that
patient with continuous bleeding i.e. acyclical and cyclical had
significant relief within three days of Lodhra treatment.

The effect of
Ashoka compound preparation was noticed within three days. It was
observed that during the next cycle all the cases had normal
menstruation i.e. the bleeding was noraml for 4-5 days and devoid of
pain and uneasiness, throughout the three cycles. Haemoglobin status
was also up graded without the use of any other heamatinics. Ashoka is
