At a distance of 61 km from Jammu, the cave is 30 meters long and just one-and-a-half meters high. At the end of the cave tombs are devoted to the three forms of the goddess mother - Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarasvati. The pilgrims must enter in small groups through a narrow opening and walk through the icy waters to reach the tombs. According to legend, the goddess mother hid in the cave while escaping a demon, she was finally killed. The tomb of Vaishno Devi is approached by Katra, which lies 13 kilometers east of the tomb and the basis for the pilgrimage.
