Free Cutting Steels are steels having a greater sulphur and phosphorus content than usual that are used to make parts for high-speed automatic and semiautomatic machine tools. Carbon, silicon, manganese, sulphur, and phosphorus are all included in free-cutting steel, which comes in the form of rods. Because of the high sulphur content, inclusions (such as manganese sulphide) develop and are distributed along the grain. These inclusions allow for easier shearing, grinding, and chip formation. Free-cutting steel is sometimes alloyed with lead and tellurium for these applications. When milled, free machining steel produces little chips. By splitting the chips into little bits, the material becomes more machinable, preventing tangling in the machinery. This enables automated equipment to function without the need for human intervention.
