An ice bank tank system is provided for refrigerating produce areas especially in dairies. the ice bank tank system allows a supply of ice to be built up in an ice bank storage tank. Cold water is circulated from the ice bank storage tank to the milk processing area where cooling is required. Each milk processing area is provided with a heat exchanger which receives cold water from the ice bank storage tank to maintain a low refrigeration temperature in the milk processing area. Each milk processing area is tapped into a chilled water circulating pipeline extending from the ice bank storage tank. The spent water from milk processing area is returned to the ice bank storage tank via a return hot water pipeline. The spent water is still sufficiently cold to be used to maintain a low condensing temperature in a conventional refrigeration unit. In the dairy industry, ice bank tanks are used for chilling water to 1i? c. The chilled water is then used for cooling milk from its arrival temperature of between 5i? c to 12i? c down to a temperature of 4i? c and also for cooling during the pasteurisation process.
