They compensate for shrinkage of the steel during solidification to ensure a good connection between the moulted metal and permanent mould. The product is constructed from an insulating ceramic fibre, covered by a stainless steel jacket or refractory lining depending on the casting process and explicitly designed to compensate for shrinkage of steel during solidification. Exothermic Sleeves are formed by injection moulding them around a zinc core. The sleeves are applied like a ring around the branch mould where it joins the riser so that during solidification, the heat from the riser goes through the sleeve and into the branch mould. The exothermic reaction in the sleeve takes place as soon as liquid aluminium is poured into it, increasing available heat for compensation.
