Cabergoline is a prescription medication used to treat conditions caused by high levels of the hormone prolactin in the body.

How It Works
This reduction in prolactin can help alleviate symptoms associated with hyperprolactinemia (excessive prolactin), such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and unwanted breast milk production in women who are not breastfeeding. It can also be used to shrink pituitary tumors that produce prolactin (prolactinomas).



Uses
Cabergoline is primarily prescribed for:

Hyperprolactinemia: A condition where the body produces too much prolactin.

Prolactinomas: Benign tumors on the pituitary gland that secrete excess prolactin.

Inhibition/Suppression of Lactation: In certain cases, it may be used to stop breast milk production.

It is also sometimes used to treat Parkinson's disease.

Dosage and Administration
Cabergoline is typically taken as a tablet, with or without food, one or two times a week. The dosage and frequency are determined by a doctor and depend on the patient's prolactin levels and how they respond to the medication. The doctor will usually start with a low dose and gradually increase it, if necessary, at intervals of no less than four weeks.

While rare, more serious side effects can occur. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

Heart valve problems or scarring in the heart, lungs, or abdomen. Symptoms can include chest pain, persistent cough, swelling in the limbs, or trouble breathing.

Unusual changes in behavior or mood, such as an increase in sexual urges or other compulsive behaviors.

Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there).

Fainting or severe dizziness, especially when standing up.
