Amoxicillin is a widely used antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin class of medications, specifically an aminopenicillin. It's a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin.


How it works (Mechanism of Action):
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It does this by binding to specific enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are crucial for building and maintaining the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall. By disrupting this process, amoxicillin weakens the cell wall, leading to cell lysis (breaking open) and ultimately, the death of the bacteria.

What it's used for (Indications):
Amoxicillin is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections in different parts of the body, including:

Ear infections
Throat infections (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis, strep throat)
Nose and sinus infections (e.g., acute bacterial sinusitis)
Lung infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
