It's a double salt of ferrous sulfate and ammonium sulfate, and contains the cations Fe2+ and NH4+. The salt is easily crystallized, and its crystals resist oxidation by air, giving it a long shelf life. This stability extends to solutions, where the ammonium ions make them slightly acidic, which slows down oxidation. Sulfuric acid can also be added to solutions to reduce oxidation.
