Fume Hoods

A fume hood is also called a fume cupboard or fume closet, which is a type of local ventilation device. It is designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapours or dusts. In design, it is a large piece of equipment enclosing five sides of a work area, the bottom of which is most commonly located at a standing work height. There are two main types of fume hood exist: ducted and ductless. However, the working principle is the same for both types. The fume hoods tend to protect the user from inhaling toxic gases and protect the product or experiment through bio-safety cabinets, and glove boxes. It also protects the environment via re-circulating fume hoods due to which certain bio-safety cabinets and any other type when fitted with appropriate filters in the exhaust airstream. Fume hoods are commonly available in five different widths; 1000 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm, 1800 mm and 2000 mm. Their depth varies between 700 mm and 900 mm and the height between 1900 mm and 2700 mm.

As ventilator device, fume hoods are generally set back against the walls and are often fitted with in-fills above so that the exhaust ductwork can be covered up. Since fume hoods are designed in recessed shape they are generally poorly illuminated by general room lighting, and hence these devices so have many internal lights with vapour-proof covers. The front of fume hood is a sash window, which is commonly made in glass that can be able to move up and down on a counterbalance mechanism. Those fume hoods that are built for educational purposes, their sides and back are also glass so that several learners can have a look into a fume hood at once. All the fume hoods contain low air flow alarm control panels.
