Crayons made of wax are distinct from pastels, which combine pigment with a dry binder like gum arabic, and oil pastels, whose binder is a combination of wax and oil. Wax is used in crayons, while oil and wax are used in oil pastels, neither of which dry out. Wax crayons and oil pastels are very different in their operation and feel, in addition to the colors they produce. To get a full, even coat while using crayons, put some time and pressure into it.
