What is the lifespan of a marigold garland?

Even when planted indoors at the beginning of the year rather than in the garden from seed, their maximum lifespan is usually less than a year. Since they only live for a single growing season, garden marigolds only have one chance to bloom before they perish. In hot summer climes, they benefit from afternoon shade but otherwise thrive in continuous sunlight. They can grow in clay soil, but they really like the kind that drains well all the way through. Marigolds require a moderate amount of water, though, in the hotter months, a user may want to give them a little more.

How many marigolds are required to create a garland?

To create a stunning garland, gather together three or four bunches of marigolds, some fishing wire (about 6 feet long), some scissors, and a tapestry needle. Instructions for hanging a garland are as follows:

They can be removed from the plant by cutting or plucking at the base of the flower.
Needles and thread can be replaced by thin wire.
To make a garland, snip the thread to the desired length and add a yard to each end.
Thread the needle through the flower's base on one side, then the other, alternating between the two.
