With modern life requiring a vast array of electrical appliances with intricate wiring systems, we must ensure that we are protected from danger whether we are in our home, at a commercial complex, or an industrial site. Faults in electrical systems are a commonplace occurrence, and under ordinary circumstances, would typically result in a leakage current. If these faults are not identified and adequate safety measures implemented, the outcome can lead to electric shock, damage to equipment, and fire hazards that could be life-threatening. An earth leakage circuit breaker ( ELCB) is a preventable measure that is designed to protect humans and property by guarding against the dangers of earth faults.
An Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker ( ELCB). or simply ELCB is a safety device specifically designed to not only prevent electric shocks but also reduce the risk of fire caused by earth leakage currents. An ELCB monitors the current flowing through the live and neutral wires and if a fault causes an earth leakage current hazardous to users, interrupts the supply of the circuit immediately. An ELCB can be thought of as a person who is watching to see whether current is flowing. It continually watches the flow of current and will immediately take action once something happens.
Lastly, let us consider the unfortunate scenario in which a person touches a faulty appliance and current starts running through the person, to earth. In this case, without a protective device, like an ELCB, the outcome is likely to be fatal. The ELCBs only need milliseconds to detect this abnormality and cut the power, it will often alarm before the person may even realize what's happening.
There are two types of ELCBs; the voltage operated ELCB and the current operated ELCB, current operated ELCBs are commonly referred to as RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or RCD (Residual Current Device).
The older voltage operated ELCB operates by detecting an increase in the voltage on the earth line. It disconnects the circuit if the voltage between the earth and neutral exceeds a specified amount. However, voltage operated ELCBs are not very efficient, and may malfunction in systems with multiple earthing points, both commonly used in today's wiring systems, and so, it has been replaced by the current operated type.
The current-operated ELCB, or RCCB, operates on the premise of finding an imbalance in the current or flow. Under normal operation, the current flowing into the circuit via the live wire will be the same current returning via the neutral wire. A discrepancy in the current indicates leakage somewhere in the system – possibly in a human body or through insulation failure – which causes the device to trip immediately. These devices will trip much faster, with much greater sensitivity and safety than voltage-based models.
A current operated ELCB uses what is referred to as a core balance transformer. The live and neutral wires are wrapped around a magnetic core. As long as the current flowing through both wires is equal and opposite the magnetic fields will cancel each other out and produce no net magnetic flux in the core.
When a leakage occurs - for example, current flowing through a person to the earth - the currents are unbalanced. This produces net magnetic flux in the core and as a result, voltage is induced in the secondary winding.
The entire process occurs within milliseconds which makes the ELCB incredibly fast and dependable for preventing electrical accidents. ELCBs are typically equipped with a test button
that allows users to ensure the unit is operating as designed to simulate a leakage condition.
The primary advantage of ELCB is the protection of human life, especially in a home setting where children, seniors, and wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens create a higher risk for electric shock. In addition, ELCB plays a role in the prevention of electrical fires caused by unnoticed leakage currents and overheating wires and spark ignition in concealed locations. There is also the impact on expensive equipment. Electrical appliances are all sensitive to faults in the wiring system as any sudden leakage or surge can damage internal circuits by not being able to function normally. An ELCB helps to prevent this scenario as it will turn off the power to the appliances once it recognizes a leakage condition.
The regulation on ELCB is another benefit as electrical safety regulations are present in many countries, to perform ELCB installations for homes and businesses. The electrical inspector is familiar with checking for proper results from installation and operation.
To provide reliability, an ELCB should be tested as often as once each month by using the built-in test button. The test button simulates leakage current within the ELCB to ensure it is working properly. If for any reason the ELCB does not trip when the test button is pressed, it should be replaced, immediately.
It is also important that the earth wire is securely fixed and that the wiring in your home or workplace complies with accepted safety standards. A licensed electrician should carry out a periodic electrical audit that will allow you to ascertain risks and ensure the ELCB is working properly.
