Carbon Forged Flanges: Types, Applications, and Standards
In general, carbon steel is used to make end flange connections and flange flanges. ASTM A694, ASTM A105N (SA105N), MSS SP-44 and DIN 2533 are examples of common standards. Associated pressure classifications range from 150 to 2500.
In plumbing, flanges are useful for connecting valves, pumps and pipes. Flanges come in a variety of forms, including welded, lap, blind and many others. The demand for carbon steel flanges is extremely high. This is due to its outstanding properties, including exceptional durability, corrosion resistance and finish.
It is useful in many sectors. These include the agricultural, energy, chemical, petrochemical and other industries. The term "flange" refers to a rim (lip), inner or outer edge, or attachment to another component. Examples include the flange at the end of a screw, a steam lever, etc.
Types of Carbon Forged Flanges
Neck flange weld
These flanges are known for having a long conical collar connected to the bottom by a wire. The inside diameter of the tube is comparable to that of the flange. WP11 fittings have a segmented tube as a feature, which is essentially stable and unlikely to cause friction in the gases or liquids passing through it. This type of flange is provided by the long arm and the smooth transformation of the same thickness. It is used in extreme applications with high demands.
Slip-on sliding flanges
In this flange configuration, the tube passes through the cube of the same without coming into contact with the plane of the contact surface to which it is attached by internal and external welds. It can be said to be simpler than the neck flange because of the less precise tube length and greater flexibility of positioning. Although significantly weaker than the neck flange, its mechanical characteristics are often suitable for resistance and exhaustion.
Unsightly flanges
Due to the wide range of operating pressures, they are used to cover the ends of pipes, valves or pipe holes. From a technological point of view, this type of WPHY 42 fitting can withstand the most demanding working conditions. It is recommended to make the closures by connecting the neck and blind flanges in terminals where the temperature is a functional element, vector or subject to cyclic movements.
Threaded flanges
Although they do not have welding properties, they allow quick and easy installation. They are used for special purposes (e.g. pipes with high ambient pressure and temperature). They cannot be used in pipelines with significant temperature variations.
Advantages of Carbon Forged Flanges
One metal element is carbon, often known as medium carbon steel. Iron and carbon components are mixed together. Many components are too small to have a significant effect on the properties. Only copper (max. 0.60%), silicon (max. 0.60%) and manganese (max. 1.65%) are allowed in pure carbon steel.
Carbon steel flanges become tougher and stronger as the carbon concentration increases. Welding requires less strength and ductility. The melting point and temperature tolerance of flanges are both reduced by higher carbon content.
How to Install and Maintain Carbon Forged Flanges
Initially, you can connect the stainless steel flange in accordance with the direct device in the pipeline, in accordance with the use of the position for installation, to make sure that the installation of the stainless steel flange is done correctly. In general, the pipeline can be installed in any position, but it must be easy to control the test. Special attention should be paid to the stainless steel flange. Stainless steel flanges can only be installed horizontally and the flow direction of the medium should be downstream below the vertical disc. In order to minimise leakage and interference with the normal operation of the pipeline, stainless steel flanges must be installed with careful attention to sealing.
Carbon Forged Flanges Applications
Carbon steel forged flanges are used in a wide range of applications, including gas and oil pipelines: Carbon steel forged flanges are widely used in the oil and gas industry because they are strong, durable and can withstand the high pressure and temperature conditions found in these types of pipelines.
Carbon Forged Flanges in the Oil and Gas Industry
Forged flanges play an important role in the petrochemical sector, where there are many oil and gas pipelines made up of pipes and other components:
Oil and its derivatives, including biobutanol, are transported through pipelines using a network of pumping stations that move the fluid at an average speed of between 1 and 6 metres per second. Due to the complexity and size of their structure, environmental impact studies must be carried out prior to construction. They are based on steel pipes with diameters ranging roughly from 12 mm to 144 inches (or 360 cm).
Like other types of pipelines, gas pipelines transport materials, but in this case the materials are flammable gases, mainly natural gas. High pressures are used. Depending on the topography, the pipelines are usually laid one to two metres underground, rarely above ground. Shut-off valves are usually installed at various points along the pipeline to stop the flow of gas if necessary.
In both situations, pipelines are used to transport commodities that require special handling during production, transportation or processing. Natural gas can flow at low temperatures (-161o), but oil and its derivatives are extremely corrosive and polluting.
What is the difference between a carbon forged flange and a carbon steel flange?
Forged flanges are stronger than cast steel flanges. Composition and structure are both similar to forgings. Forged flanges have higher production costs than cast flanges due to the nature of their manufacture.
Why should I choose a carbon forged flange over other types of flanges?
Forged flanges are more durable than cast steel flanges. Both composition and structure are similar to forgings. Due to the way they are made, forged flanges have higher production costs than cast flanges.
Are carbon forged flanges suitable for cryogenic applications?
Low carbon, 3.5% nickel steels are often used in LPG storage tanks at temperatures down to -100°C. Many aluminium, nickel and titanium alloys are also suitable for these temperatures.
Can I weld a carbon forged flange to a pipe?
Under normal conditions, it is not necessary to weld carbon steel and stainless steel together in the same location, and the use of a flange joint is preferable.
What types of carbon forged flanges are available?
The steel grade varies according to the material and its carbon content. Forged carbon steel flanges are used to connect pumps, valves and other machinery. Carbon steel flanges are available in the following grades: ASTM A350, ASTM A516, ASTM A694, ASTM A182 and ASTM A105.2.
