Petcoke is the bottom of the barrel product, comprising of relatively pure carbon. It is produced from heavy residues by coker units in refineries. Petcoke is a high calorific value, high sulphur, low volatile fraction fuel. It is cheaper than many fuels on a calorific basis. Raw or green Petcoke is formed from the coker unit. Raw Petcoke with higher metal & Sulphur content can be used as a fuel and this is called fuel grade Petcoke. Petcoke is a relatively new fuel in the Indian market. Petcoke supply and demand are increasing at a high rate. Petcoke demand in India is expected to be robust due to its competitive cost and better availability compared to Coal.

• It has a very high Gross Calorific Value of 8500 approximately, almost double than that of the local and imported coal on Air Dried Basis.

• Moisture Content in Petcoke is only 7% compared to 20- 25% in Imported Coal offering much more extra solid material for burning.

Petcoke can be used as a replacement of coal. It can be used in blend form along with coal or 100% in AFBC / CFBC boilers.

AFBC Boilers are capable of absorbing SOx and restrict SO emissions to the desired levels by limestone injection system.

Ash content in Petcoke is much lower than coal. Hence particulate emissions are

always lower as compared to coal.
