Finger print templates of persons can be stored in these devices, based on which these devices can identify the person when the same finger is presented to the device.

Such devices can be used for attendance recording of employees. As these machines are bio-metric, which means that they recognise a part of the body, "proxy" attendance can be eliminated. Thus an organisation saves the expenses it may have incurred by paying a person, even when he/she was absent.

The finger is identified by a finger identifying "algorithm". Devices like the X990 have a superior algorithm, which identifies fingers very fast and easily.

However, finger print devices have a limitation that they cannot identify the fingers in some cases like senior citizen (whose finger surfaces have wrinkles), or heavy duty labourers working with sharp objects (with cuts/ bruises on fingers) or workers working in soaps/ chemicals (whose finger prints are almost flat). In these cases, face reading is a preferred option.
