Product Overview
Key Features
Active Ingredient
Generic Name: Esomeprazole
Chemical Class: Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI). Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole.
Mechanism of Action: Esomeprazole works by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme, also known as the "proton pump," located in the stomach's parietal cells. This enzyme is responsible for the final step of acid production. By inhibiting this pump, esomeprazole effectively reduces gastric acid secretion, providing relief from acid-related symptoms and allowing damaged tissues to heal.
Indications (Uses)
Esomeprazole is prescribed for the treatment and management of:
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): A condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and potential damage. Esomeprazole is used for both the short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD and the long-term healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus).
Peptic Ulcer Disease: It is used to treat ulcers in the stomach and the upper part of the intestine (duodenum). It is also used in combination with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to treat ulcers caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori.
NSAID-Associated Ulcers: It helps to prevent and heal stomach ulcers in patients who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for a prolonged period.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A rare condition in which the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid due to a tumor.
Dosage and Administration
Forms: Esomeprazole is available in various oral forms, including delayed-release capsules and tablets, and as granules for oral suspension.
Strengths: Common tablet and capsule strengths are 20 mg and 40 mg. A lower 2.5 mg and 5 mg strength is also available for pediatric use.
Dosing: The dosage and treatment duration vary depending on the condition. For most conditions, it is taken once a day. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, it may be taken twice a day.
Timing: Esomeprazole is best taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal, as food can interfere with its absorption.
Administration: The tablets and capsules are designed to release the medication in the intestine, not the stomach. They should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.

Headache
Nausea, diarrhea, or constipation

Long-term or less common side effects can include:
Low Magnesium Levels (Hypomagnesemia): Prolonged use (over three months) can lead to a deficiency, causing symptoms like muscle cramps, fatigue, and an irregular heartbeat.
Bone Fractures: Long-term, high-dose use, particularly in older adults, may increase the risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Long-term use can reduce the absorption of vitamin B12 from food.
Increased Risk of Certain Infections: Such as Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
Kidney Problems: In rare cases, it can cause a type of kidney inflammation.
Important Precautions
Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter (OTC): While some lower-dose versions are available OTC for frequent heartburn, higher doses are prescription-only.
Consult a Doctor: It is important to consult a healthcare professional before taking esomeprazole, especially for long-term use, to rule out other serious conditions and to monitor for potential side effects.
Drug Interactions: Esomeprazole can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners like clopidogrel and some HIV medications. Always inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
