Dutasteride is a medication used primarily to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate gland, in men. Here is a general description: Drug Class: It belongs to a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Formulation: It is typically available as an oral capsule (soft gelatin capsule), not a tablet, and is usually taken once a day. Mechanism of Action: Dutasteride works by blocking both the Type 1 and Type 2 isoforms of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. This enzyme converts the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the primary androgen responsible for the growth and enlargement of the prostate gland. By reducing DHT levels, dutasteride helps to shrink the prostate and relieve BPH symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak stream, and frequent urination. Usage: Monotherapy: Used alone to treat symptomatic BPH. Combination Therapy: Often used in combination with an alpha-blocker medication like tamsulosin (FlomaxAR) to provide greater relief of BPH symptoms. Off-label Use: It is sometimes used off-label (not an FDA-approved use) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Important Considerations: The capsules should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or opened, as the contents can irritate the mouth or throat. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle the capsules, as the contents can be absorbed through the skin and may cause birth defects in a male fetus. It may take 6 months or longer to see the full benefit of the medication for BPH symptoms. Dutasteride can affect the results of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test used for prostate cancer screening. You should inform your doctor if you are taking this medication before having a PSA test. Patients are advised not to donate blood while taking dutasteride and for at least 6 months after stopping it, due to the risk of the drug being transferred to a pregnant woman through a blood transfusion.
