Labrador Retriever History

The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland Canada, not Labrador as their name suggests. They were called St John’s dogs in the early 1800s and were used by fishing men to help them retrieve their nets and help gather fish that escaped the fishing lines. Labradors were very helpful as they loved to swim and worked hard.

The breed caught the attention of British and other nobles who visited Canada. They started to bring them back to England, which they began to better their Labrador Retrievers and breed them. With time, Labrador Retrievers evolved from being a fishing class assistance to becoming a hunting work and finally evolved to a versatile pet and companion as provided services dogs or animals.

Appearance and Physical Traits

Labradors are medium-to-large-sized dogs with a sturdy and athletic physique. They usually weigh between 55 and 80 pounds (25 to 36 kg) and measure 21.5 to 24.5 inches (55 to 62 cm) at the shoulder. Labs have short, dense, water-resistant coats. They come in three standard colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. 

They have broad heads, expressive eyes, and the characteristic "otter" tail that, combined, give them a friendly, approachable look. Another feature they have that is often overlooked are their webbed feet, which, in combination with their muscular bodies, make Labs outstanding swimmers.

Temperament and Personality

Labradors are generally known for being gentle, happy, outgoing, and eager to please. They are friendly with children, adults, and other pets, which makes them one of the best dog breeds for children. Intelligent and eager-to-learn dogs, most Labs are good learners and will respond to training, whether for basic obedience or higher levels of training to help assist individuals who are disabled.

While Labs are friendly they do not make the best guard dogs. Although they will bark at unfamiliar noise, they are more likely to greet strangers, wagging their tails than barking or growling in a threatening way.

Exercise and Activity Needs

Labradors are active and playful dogs that need a lot of exercise each day to stay both physically and mentally fit. Fetching, swimming, running, hiking, and agility and exercise games are great ways to keep them stimulated. If Labs don't get enough exercise, they can become bored, and some have been known to become destructive and take up chewing and digging.

Because of their love of food, Labradors tend to gain weight easily. To maintain a healthy weight and to prevent health problems related to obesity, regular exercise and controlled portion sizes are essential.

Training and Intelligence

Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and, therefore, easy to train with basic obedience and problem-solving. Labs have been trained as guide dogs, therapy dogs, detection dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs because they are quick learners and will often listen to their handler.

Labradors respond well to positive reinforcement techniques. They are motivated by food, so healthy treats are ideal to use during training sessions. Properly handling some socialization and basic training early will help ensure your puppy grows into a well-mannered adult dog.

Grooming and Care

Labrador Retrievers are fairly easy to groom. They have a short double coat that is moderate to heavy shedding, which occurs year-round and is more pronounced due to seasonal shedding in spring and fall. It is a good idea to brush your dog once per week to help control shedding and maintain coat health. Maintaining regular baths, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care is an important part of your dog's routine grooming.

Health and Lifespan

Labradors Retrievers are generally healthy dogs and have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. However, dogs of all breeds can develop certain health conditions and Labrador Retrievers may be predisposed to:

    • Hip and elbow dysplasia.

    • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).

    • Exercise induced collapse (EIC).

    • Obesity.

    • Ear infections.

Regular visits to the veterinarian reduce the risks of many of the problems mentioned above. A responsible breeder will always health screen their dogs prior to breeding for any of the more common genetic conditions, and will only breed healthy dogs.
