Ceftazidime + Avibactam is a combination of ceftazidime and avibactam. Ceftazidime is a bactericidal agent that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Avibactam works by preventing bacteria from breaking down ceftazidime.

Ceftazidime and avibactam combination injection is used alone or together with other medicines (eg metronidazole) to treat complicated infections in many different parts of the body (eg stomach kidneys). It is also used to treat hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (HABP/VABP).

Ceftazidime and avibactam combination injection belongs to the class of medicines known as cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However this medicine will not work for colds flu or other virus infections.

The combination of ceftazidime and avibactam injection is used with metronidazole (Flagyl) to treat abdominal (stomach area) infections. It is also used to treat pneumonia that developed in people who are on ventilators or who were in a hospital and kidney and urinary tract infections. Ceftazidime is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Avibactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from breaking down ceftazidime.

Antibiotics such as ceftazidime and avibactam will not work for colds flu or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

The combination of ceftazidime and avibactam injection comes as a powder to be added to fluid and injected intravenously (into a vein). It is usually infused (injected slowly) intravenously over a period of 2 hours every 8 hours. The length of your treatment depends on your general health the type of infection you have and how well you respond to the medication. Your doctor will tell you how long to use ceftazidime and avibactam injection. You may receive ceftazidime and avibactam injection in a hospital or you may administer the medication at home. If you will be receiving ceftazidime and avibactam injection at home your healthcare provider will show you how to use the medication. You should begin to feel better during the first few days of treatment with ceftazidime and avibactam injection. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse tell your doctor. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish ceftazidime and avibactam injection tell your doctor.

Avibactam is a non--lactam -lactamase inhibitor used in combination with ceftazidime for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections complicated urinary tract infections and hospital or ventilator-acquired pneumonia.

Avibactam is a non- lactam -lactamase inhibitor that inactivates some -lactamases (Ambler class A -lactamases including Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases Ambler class C and some Ambler class D -lactamases) by a unique covalent and reversible mechanism and protects ceftazidime from degradation by certain -lactamases. Avibactam rapidly reaches the periplasm of bacteria at high enough concentrations to restore activity of ceftazidime against ceftazidime-resistant -lactamase-producing strains. Avibactam does not decrease the activity of ceftazidime against ceftazidime susceptible organisms.
