The Barramundi or Asian Sea Bass (Lates calcarifer) is a species of catadromous fish in family Latidae of order Perciformes. Barramundi is native to Australia and regions of Southeast Asia. The fish comes from both wild fisheries and aquaculture production. The biggest supply of wild-caught barramundi comes from Indonesia. Farmed barramundi is a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to grouper, snapper, and halibut that is available year-round with the leading aquaculture producers based in Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. Barramundi is most commonly available as fresh and frozen forms. Fresh product forms are Fillet, H&G, Steaks and Whole. Frozen forms are Fillets, Portions and Value Added products. The Barramundi provides a firm white meat that is very popular for baked, broiled, fried, or steam cooked. Fresh seasonal availability is Jan to Dec. Frozen products are available year- round.
