Cable glands are made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride),
a flexible and non-reactive plastic; PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a plastic which
is highly resistant to chemicals and similar substances; Nylon, a tough,
multipurpose choice with strong resistance to pressure; Synthetic rubbers; Steel,
aluminium and brass etc.
The principal types of cable glands are Single
compression, used for smaller installations, typically within buildings; Double
compression, primarily used in factories and power plants where there is requirement
of stronger seals; Flexible hose, mainly used in higher temperature sites; and PVC,
which is used typically for control cables attached to instrumentation.
The arrangement, size and design differs
according to the type of cable glands. They are typically used for fixing
cables in place and preventing them from being twisted or accidentally pulled
out; providing an airtight seal to keep out dust, dirt, water and moisture
which is a key function with electrical equipment; fortifying the cable against
strain; protecting the exposed end of the cable from damage; some also help to
earth electrical cables and cutting the risk of electrocution and shocks.
Armoured cable glands are designed for use with
steel-wired armoured (SWA) cables, and is the standard for underground and wall
cabling installations. The steel netting protects the cable glands from damage.
Waterproof cable glands basically follows the
International Protection (IP) standard, a widely used marker of resistance to
water, dust and other contaminants. They offer waterproofing,
which means they can resist immersion in water one metre or more in depth.
