Yam (Suran)

We are offering our customers Yam (Suran) which have an earthy, hardy taste and usually a minimal amount of sweetness. Although they are available throughout the year their season runs from October through December when they are at their best.

There are approximately 200 different varieties of yams with flesh colors varying from white to ivory to yellow to purple while their thick skin comes in white, pink or brownish-black . Their shape is long and cylindrical (oftentimes having offshoots referred to as "toes") while their exterior texture is rough and scaly.

Sweet potatoes have been classified as an "excellent source of vitamin A" and "a very good source of vitamin C," according to the World's Healthiest Foods . In fact, the vegetable delivers a whopping 769 percent of your daily recommended value of vitamin A. It also delivers 65 percent of your vitamin C and 29 percent of vitamin B6. Unfortunately, yams do not provide nearly as much vitamin A as sweet potatoes. In fact, the root vegetable provides only 3 percent of your daily allowance.
