Features:

Reaming beneath casing to permit lowering it further into the hole is a job for the under-reamer. For example, with EX casing already set through caving overburden, more caving ground is passed through, making further drilling impossible. The casing cannot be pulled for reaming because the hole will cave at the top. And with EX in use, a reduction in hole size is impossible. This is not common occurrence, but when it happens, the under-reamer offers the most economical way to save the hole.

The top of the under-reamer connects to the reaming shell, and the bottom to a bull nose pilot or a diamond bit.

The under-reamer is lowered in to position and the pump applies pressure to the plunger. This forces the cutters to pivot out in to the formation. As the under-reamer is rotated, the cutters ream clearance for the casing. The casing should be held securely by a clamp so that it won't fall when the under-reamer cuts initial clearance. If it falls, the dowel pins will shear the cutters will be lost in the hole. Care should be taken when reaming near the casing to prevent damage to cutters and casing.

A small hole in the plunger permits some water to pass to control the cutters and flush the cuttings. Still, enough pressure is maintained on the plunger to actuate the cutters.

The pump is turned off when reaming is completed. The spring forces the plunger up, and the cutters are forced back as the under-reamer is retracted through the casing.

Under-reamers come with tool steel cutters for soft ground or diamond set cutters for hard rock. Order cutters and plug separately.
