Name and Composition - Calcium carbonate: CaCO3. Impurities of iron are also found. Transparent variety of calcite is known as Iceland spar/Calc-spar.
Physical Properties - Transparent to opaque, bluish to white coloured rhombohedra crystals having vitreous to earthy lusture, hardness: 3, Sp. gr. 2.71.
Mode of Occurrence - Occurs as vein, fracture filling (generally occurs as hydrothermal deposit in metamorphic rocks).
Uses - Calcite is one of the important ingredient required in glass and ceramic industries for imparting glaze to the ceramics and also as flux. In pulverized form, it is used as filler in rubber goods, textiles and as an extender in paints and as a carrier in insecticides. Other uses are in preparation of fat lime, soap, detergents, plastic, polymers etc.
