Sodium acetate is also used in textiles to improve the durability of fabrics, neutralize sulfuric acid waste streams during textile production and as a mordant to fix dyes on fabrics. b) Medical Industry: Reuseable heating pads are made with sodium acetate trihydrate. Turning on a heating pad causes sodium acetate trihydrate (which is inside the heating pad) to undergo a bond-forming process of crystallization that is exothermic, producing heat. The crystal formation is reversible, allowing heating pads to be reused indefinitely.Sodium acetate is also added to formulas for diuretic expectorants and systemic alkalizers and to dry mixtures for renal dialysis. c) Food Industry: Sodium acetate is commonly used as a food preservative under the label sodium diacetate.
