In the food processing industry, it’s used as an anti-foaming agent, emulsifier, and thickener. It allows the manufacturing of hydrogels for the dressing of wounds. Physical Properties 

• Polyethylene glycol is available in both liquid and solid form. In the liquid state, the molecular weight is less than 600. In the solid state, molecular weight is more than 1000. 
• Polyethylene glycol is nonvolatile, tasteless, odorless, non-toxic, and inert.
• The density of polyethylene glycol decreases with the temperature rise. In the case of liquid polyethylene glycol, the density ranges from 1.12 to 1.14 g/cm³. 
• With the increase in molecular weight, density will also increase. 
• Polyethylene glycol has a flash point of 182-287 degrees Celsius. 
• It has an auto-ignition temperature of 360 degrees Celsius. 
• The melting and boiling point of polyethylene glycol depends upon the molecular weight. 
• It has a hygroscopic property which helps to retain water from the environment. 

Chemical Properties

• Polyethylene glycol is derived from repeating units of ethylene glycol. It changes the structure according to changes in temperature.  
• Polyethylene glycol is a water-soluble compound and organic solvents like benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and chloroform. 
• It’s insoluble in diethyl ether and hexane.
• It’s a non-volatile liquid at room temperature.
• The melting point is generally around 60 degrees Celsius and increases with the increase in hardness. 
• Polyethylene glycol with a low molecular weight has high solvent power. 
• It is a non-toxic, inert, colorless, odorless, and non-volatile compound. 

Uses of Polyethylene glycol 

• Polyethylene glycol is used to retain the water in the stool to reduce the problem of constipation.

• Large soap bubbles can be extended in size with polyethylene glycol. 

Instruction to Use in Constipation
 

Polyethylene glycol is prepared for oral intake use in constipation. It helps to reduce the problem of constipation with the retention of moisture in stool. It’s directed with proper guidance for safe usage. 

• It can be taken once a day with 17 g of PEG mixed in 8 ounces of liquid. It can be taken with liquids like water, juice, tea, coffee, or soda. 
• Initial response can range from 2 to 4 days to experience the response of bowel movement. 
• It should not be taken for more than two weeks.
• All the instructions of physicians must be followed for usage by the patient.
