APPLICATION

Heating Pads : Sodium acetate, or hot ice, is commonly found in heating pads and hand warmers. Sodium acetate freezes at 54Aca A . But super saturated sodium acetate trihydrate is also very stable, and it easily remains as a liquid at room temperature or below. This is known as super cooling. Small amounts of this sodium acetate are placed inside small pouches containing a metal disc. When the user is in need of warmth, they simply click the metal disc inside the pouch. This releases a few crystals of the sodium acetate. The sodium acetate liquid quickly turns to its solid form. Since sodium acetate freezes at 54Aca A , the solid ice returns to that temperature giving off heat. Many other types of hand warmers use irreversible reactions to produce heat.
